Transportation Updates.

The Transportation Committee of the RRROCA Board has the role of representing the community of Rocky Ridge/Royal Oak with respect to Transportation issues.

There are several important transportation projects and issues affecting our community.  Examples of current issues are:

  • the planned LRT station in Rocky Ridge and the associated permanent closure of the Rocky Ridge/Crowchild Trail intersection in Fall of 2009
  • the Stoney Trail/Crowchild interchange
  • the Stoney Trail/Country Hills Boulevard interchange
  • local traffic issues

As far as the timescales involved for some of these projects the following are the best estimates that we currently have.  Please note that this information is subject to change and for more reliable information, community members are advised to contact the appropriate City Business Unit.

1) An upgrade to the Country Hills Boulevard and Royal Birch Boulevard intersection (anticipated completion – Late Spring 2009)

2)  Upgrades of the Royal Birch Boulevard / Royal Oak Way and Royal Birch Boulevard / Royal Oak Drive intersections (will be addressed during the implementation of the LRT project)

3)  The extension of the two North lanes of Country Hills Boulevard to 12 Mile Coulee Road from Rocky Ridge Road (anticipated completion – Fall 2009)

4)  Addressing pedestrian safety at the intersection of Rocky Ridge Road and Rocky Ridge Boulevard (subject to a study by City ROADS)

5) The upgrade of the Crowchild Trail and 12 Mile Coulee Road intersection (will be addressed during the implementation of the LRT Project)

If you have any questions, comments or concerns regarding transportation issues in our community please email the Committee on info@rrroca.com or leave a message on 403-668-9174.

Frequently Asked Questions

As we receive questions we will be developing a set of FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) and their answers.  These will posted on this web page in the section below.

Q. Why is Rocky Ridge Road closing permanently?

A. It is necessary to close Rocky Ridge Road in order to comply with policy regarding direct access to expressways and required distances to construct the full interchange at Stoney Trail.

Q. When will Rocky Ridge Road be closing and what is the Community Association’s view of this?

A. The permanent closure of the intersection between Rocky Ridge Road and Crowchild Trail is planned to take place during Spring of 2009.

For the background of the closure, refer to the Rocky Ridge Area Structure Plan (originally published in 1998).

The Community Association is concerned about the impact of the closure on the traffic flows within the community and in particular the impact on traffic flows on Royal Oak Drive and Rocky Ridge Boulevard.  The Association is engaged with City personnel to obtain the latest information available in this regard and as information becomes available it will be published on this website.

Q. Are there any alternatives to the closure of Rocky Ridge Road?

A. The MLA for our area, the Honourable Lindsay Blackett (Minister of Culture and Community Spirit), has engaged his colleague in the Alberta Provincial cabinet, the Honourable Luke Ouellette (Minister of Transportation), on this issue.  The discussions centre around the possibility of constructing a flyover from Southbound Rocky Ridge Road to Eastbound Crowchild Trail and from Westbound Crowchild Trail to Northbound Rocky Ridge Road.

Q. When will the CTrain Station be open to the public?

A. The Station will open to the public in 2011.

Q. How many parking stalls will be available?

A. There will be approximately 400 parking stalls with approximately 200 in each of the North (Rocky Ridge) and the South (Tuscany) Park and Rides.  The Park and Ride facilities are designed to serve the needs of the local community.  With no direct access to Crowchild Trail, it is expected that commuters from West of the City will continue to use Crowfoot Station.

Q. When will the bus routes serving Rocky Ridge and Royal Oak (i.e. routes  58, 148 and 158) change as a result of the permanent closure of the Rocky Ridge Road/ Crowchild Trail intersection and what will these changes look like?

A. The timing and other details of the changes to these routes are still to be determined.  As more information becomes available it will be posted on this page.
